1. Can I stay with friends in Melbourne and not in the accommodation?
Yes, you can, but you won't be guaranteed tickets to the make poverty history concert if you do this. We are trying to build a campaign community at the hostel, as well as admittedly having an obligation for a lot of beds to fill.
2. Can I get a one way bus fare: ie can I come down or go back by bus/plane either way?
No, unless you find someone to replace you on the way back, as for every empty seat on the bus it loses The Oaktree Foundation around $100.
3. Is the accommodation going to be good/fun?
Yes yes yes! We have a cinema, a rooftop bbq, a lounge downstairs and heaps of common areas. As well as two dinners and all breakfasts, banners everywhere on the walls, activities, cross-fertilisation of ideas, and crazy fun.
4. I'm under 18. Will I be supervised and allowed to participate in all events?
We will observe a strict duty of care for the transport and accommodation aspects. In the hostel, all under 18 yr olds will be placed on a secure floor of the hostel inaccessible by other hostel guests, except for supervisors. Under 18 yr olds will not be allowed in the bar area of the hostel, but we are not planning to rely heavily on the bar as a venue. We are planning 'all ages friendly' activities. More supervision issues, or for parent's concerns, please ring Madeleine 0405 229 623.
5. When will I receive the final info pack with the exact itinerary?
The info pack will come out 2 weeks prior, on 2 November. This will include an MPH policy issues briefing, and much more minute details. Please be patient for those at the moment as there are many enquiries to respond to - unless it is something major, most questions will be answered in this pack.
6. What does 'late' mean on the buses' return?
Buses will leave Melbourne at 3pm for SA and ACT (arriving back about 11pm), and for NSW we will do an overnight sleeper bus, leaving at 6pm and arriving 6am Monday 21st. This decision will be communicated to all NSW participants, as we understand this is a signficant undertaking! The reason why we need to leave this late is that the Oaktree National Conference, which will have about 70% of participants, wont finish until around 3pm on the Sunday. If we left straight away at 3pm, we would arrive in Central Sydney at 3am, (not a good time!).
7. Is it worth coming along if I dont get a ticket to the concert?
Yes!!!!!!!!!!! Firstly, there will be a Fri Nov 17 live site at Waterside Docklands, with Dallas Crane, Something for Kate and other bands and thousands of people - the same size as the Myer Music Bowl Concert (so, hardly second billing). There will also be the G20 civil society forum on Thursday 16 and the G20 Festival in Alexandra Gardens with Dancers, stalls, food, music on Sat 17.
8. Will it feel like a daggy school camp?
Come on, admit it you are thinking this. No! Although all these conditions above sound complicated, it is actually going to be very laid back and you will have a lot of freedom, and free time.
9. Do I have to be an Oaktree member to come on miles per hour?
No. We are encouraging anyone with an interest in eradicating extreme poverty to come along. If you an are an Oaktree member, or very interested in becoming part of the Oaktree team, you can attend a teambuilding, workshop and vision conference at Monash Uni across the weekend. If you don't want to come to this conference, you can attend the G20 festival on the saturday and catch up with friends/other organisations across the weekend.
